Photography Final
How much of an individual’s personality is revealed through their facial characteristics? Innocence emanates from a child’s countenance, the naivety of youth manifested in those hopeful, inquisitive eyes and soft, glowing skin. The deep-set wrinkles of an elder’s face map out a life full of endearing moments and enduring hardships. Crow’s feet, or laugh lines suggest years of happiness, while a furrowed brow indicates a solemn existence. A facial scar might be worn as a badge of honor or serve as a constant reminder of one’s regrets. It is unfortunate that our initial assessment of an individual is generally derived from their visage, but such is the way of this vain and material world. For my final project, I decided to shoot portraits of those people who are often overlooked in our society; those vagabonds, vagrants and drifters who call the streets, subway stations, and benches of New York City their home. It was my hope to capture the hardship and destitution inherent in these individuals' personas, while challenging preconceived notions of what society considers compelling about the human face.
